RP’s extraordinary earthquakes

19 Jul

Reader Len wrote and said that she wrote Brazilian psychic asking for confirmation of his supposed prediction and got an answer–no, its not in this lifetime but the next–in 2018! Hahaha! So much for this quack! The only quakes I felt last night were those coming from my bed, and some from my ceiling, hehehe!

But, one reader is correct–what this Brazilian “psy-kick” wants to convey is for us to be prepared. Yes, are’nt we?

Everyday, we are experiencing earthquakes of a different kind–those made by our stupid government. The oil price hikes are 8 magnitude quakes which destroys our budgets. The high food costs are even 9-magnitude ones because it threatens our very existence. Worst, we even have political quakes in the magnitude of 6-7 which eats up whatever taxes we put in the public coffers.

Such extraordinary quakes kill us softly. These destroy our indigenous moral code because we are being forced to go on temporary exile to other countries for the sake of feeding our brood here. These extraordinary quakes even wreck havoc the once legendary unity of the Filipino family because more and more of our family members are working and finding no time for that 6pm meal prayer time.

Filipinos are a surviving lot. We are made of sturdier stuff. Our DNA is different from other Asians because we have this coping mechanism in us that allows us to survive in extreme environments, especially this one we are living right now.

We don’t need a Brazilian to remind us to prepare for any eventuality, since, we Filipinos know how to. We were raised by our parents to be strong.

However, much as we like to be rocked almost frequently by these quakes, we need to stop these quakes that threaten our very lives by just one act.

Change.

Yes, change! Unlike natural feats for landscape change, we can stop these quakes from destroying the fabric of our society. Yes, we can!

Unlike natural earthquakes, these man-made ones are within our control. We can predict them, we can re-create them, and we can even obliterate them outright if we want!

We don’t need seismographs to show us the intensity of these quakes. We only have our minds and our hands to use to at least mitigate or even erase them if we want.

Yes, change is what we need and change we will get in God’s sweet time.

Sichuan Earthquake Reported Today

17 Jul

This came out of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, right after I finished writing my previous entry. Is this another pre-seismic velocity change which could precede a great one outside China? We may never know.

Moderate quake rumbles through same China region

Agence France-Presse,First Posted 04:58:00 07/18/2008

BEIJING — A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China early Friday, the US Geological Survey said, striking the area devastated by a massive quake in May.

The quake struck 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of Mianyang in Sichuan province and 110 kilometers north of Chengdu, the provincial capital, at 12:40 a.m. (1640 GMT), the USGS said. It hit at a depth of 16.7 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The May 12 quake, which measured 8.0 on the Richter scale, devastated wide swathes of Sichuan province, leaving nearly 70,000 people dead and more than 17,000 missing.

D-day–July 18, 2008 Quake

17 Jul

So, this is the day. I’m posting this, looking at 4:34 am in my Mac. I’m living in a condo in Makati so if this happens, then, I’m screwed. Why? An 8 magnitude quake could flatten buildings in Makati. A quake like that could unleash 18 billion tons of energy waves. That’s what happened to San Francisco California in 1906.

Four days ago, a series of 6.4 magnitude quakes rocked the Philippines. Before that, a 7.9 magnitude quake hit China, killing 8 people. Japan was also hit by a strong quake. Indonesia has been hit by a series of very strong quakes, between 6-7 magnitudes after that real shocker of a quake last December 2004 which caused that huge tsunami. The latest was a 7.8 magnitude, which occurred after an 8.4 magnitude quake killed nine people.

If we are to believe that pre-seismic velocity changes such as this precedes a major or a great earthquake, as what this news article published in this site www.inthenews.co.uk/news/science/sport/books/general-sport/scientists-move-closer-earthquake-prediction-$1231089.html, then there’s indeed, reason to worry.

Fenglin Niu of Rice University says that:

” detecting a pre-seismic velocity change is at best only a small step toward reliable earthquake prediction”

Scientists say that ”Such pre-seismic changes are consistent with lab experiments that exhibit precursory phenomena, namely an increase in microcrack density preceding the occurrence of an earthquake.

If we are to believe this though, may never stop ourselves from worrying. I mean, these countries which I wrote here are our neighbors. They lie in the Pacific Ring of Fire and by induction, if it happened in these countries, it could also happen here.

According to the USSEIS (a US seismologic agency), 8 magnitude quakes occur every 5 to 10 years. When was the last time we had an 8 magnitude quake?

Can anyone predict an earthquake event?

Badaoui Rouhban, Chief Section for Disaster Reduction of the UNESCO based in Paris, France has this to say:

It is not possible to predict the day and location of an earthquake, including an 8- magnitude one. However it is possible through in-depth seismological research, measurements and observations to estimate the probabilities for the occurrence of potential future earthquakes in a given geographical location. For example, scientists are able to estimate that over the next 20 or 30 years the probability of the occurrence of a major earthquake in Istanbul, Tokyo, Tehran, Chile or the San Francisco Bay area is such and such….(in percentage). The Chinese have successfully and exceptionally been able to predict the Haicheng earthquake in north-east China in 1975, which remains the only destructive earthquake to have been successfully predicted. This enabled several hours’ warning to be given and the loss of life to be kept very low.

Another expert, Dr. Carlos Estuardo VENTURA, Director, Earthquake Engineering Research Facility,Department of Civil Engineering at The University of British Columbia,Vancouver, CANADA has this to say:

The technology that we have today does not allow us to predict earthquakes, in general. There have been cases, however, in which scientific-based predictions have worked for certain types of earthquakes and regions of the world. I am confident that one day in the not so distant future we will know enough about earthquakes that it would be possible for us to make predictions with a high degree of confidence.

Locations of recent quakes in Asia-Pacific

Locations of recent quakes in Asia-Pacific

Okey. So, it’s not possible.

What we can deduce from all these is this: we need to monitor pre-seismic velocity changes every now and then. Hence, I’m giving you some data related to this from the National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore which reported this:

  • The most recent quake so far monitored is in the island of Sumatra, Indonesia which recorded a 5.5 magnitude quake last 14 July 2008
  • Recent earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or above detected within the region bounded by 60°North – 50°South, 60° – 180°East.

Are we next?

Are we next?

The US Geological Society, meanwhile, released a map showing all the earthquakes that occurred during the past few days and most of them are within their own region and that of the USSR, near Alaska.

However if you look closely, there’s also a string of strong earthquakes in Asia.

So, its natural for people to worry since the Philippines lie in that “dreaded” region called the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”

Let me assure you though that the breath and volume of literature which I read about earthquake point to just one thing—earthquakes are one of the enigmas of nature. With the exception of cats and dogs, humans have’nt been able to accurately predict when an earthquake would hit a particular area or location.

It may or may not happen. If it happens, then, we can’t do anything about it. If it does’nt happen, well, we may as well prepare for it. Being prepared is always a good thing.

Manila–are we turning into a City of Garbage?

Northrail, ZTE, JDV and Oil Prices

14 Jul

Try selling Manila Bay to the Chinese. Maybe they'll bite.

Try selling Manila Bay to the Chinese. Maybe they'll bite.

Ed Pamintuan, Gloria’s trusty lieutenant and former campaign operator, is now in a bind. Interviewed over at News at 8 by Ricky Carandang (ANC, 8am, Mon-Fridays), he found it difficult to explain the current mess government is in the Northrail project. The Chinese side is asking for US$ 200 million more for the project; otherwise they’ll pull themselves out. They are asking for more though they have’nt even started constructing just one bit of rail of that 27 kilometer stretch from Caloocan to Malolos Bulacan. And we are paying 1 million pesos every day for it since 2004! Former Senate President Frank Drilon said we should scrap the project, since it’s costing taxpayers that much for a project which have’nt even started yet.

Logical.

Hey Joe, what are you celebrating about?

Hey Joe, what are you celebrating about?

Yet, before we scrap this project, let’s hear what project proponent former speaker Joe de Venecia Jr. wants to say. De Venecia has been saying that he’s ready to spill everything before the Senate. Iloilo Vice Governor Rolex Suplico hinted that De Venecia might go to the Senate next week. But that’s because of the ZTE-NBN deal. Though Suplico got a rebuke from the Supreme Court for his bid to declare that anomalous deal null and void, the former Spice boy is still hoping for a miracle thru the Senate. Suplico aired some petty government official’s view that the deal is being given a new lease of life thru a new name. ZTE officials already gave a downpayment to some government functionaries and it’s hard to kill a deal like that.

If the ZTE-NBN deal is being revived, surely, the Northrail project might just suffer a different fate given that it’s already a done deal and taxpayers are spending money for it. Will Joe DV talk about the Northrail project also? Joe DV should get this over with. He’s been making all these threats and alibis that the public is tired hearing him beat two old horses down. And for what?

All of these political activities are geared towards an impeachment complaint by October 11. An impeachment just meant to embarrass Gloria and debilitate her come 2010. It’s actually good to support such initiatives but it should instead lead to a genuine ouster instead of just being used as a vehicle for political embarrassment.

This is what we're supposed to be doing

If Joe’s  procrastinating, waiting for that miracle deal from  heaven, protesters are not backing out from a fight. In the  last few days, militants have been storming the oil company  offices, demanding a rollback of oil prices. Ibon  Foundation just found out that we’re being fooled by  these companies possibly charging us 12 pesos per liter  more than they should. As expected, oil companies  defended themselves, saying that Ibon Foundation did’nt  have enough data to support their claims. I seriously  don’t know who’s in the right at this point, but if an oil  company can lower their prices by 1 peso per liter for gasoline, it shows to me that the price of that precious commodity is actually even lower not just by one peso but by at least 5 pesos per liter.

We're paying for their food and they tell us they can't do anything?

What all these things mean is simple–we, the People, are being schemed at by those in power. We are paying more than 80 billion pesos worth of VAT from buying an overpriced oil that government encourage because they are getting more money from us.

We are paying millions for projects which does’nt see the light of day and we are grateful for one of them for indicating a willingness to snitch his old colleagues. Our government has turned into a big operator’s paradise that oppresses us rather than help us in these times of distress.

They’re saying–we can’t do anything what with rising global oil prices. Ah, so that’s it. Why are you there in the first place? Are we just wasting our precious, hard-earned money paying all those taxes you impose on us just to subsidize those expensive food you’re eating there and getting nothing in return?

Time for a revolution, my friends.
