Police theories on what really happened to Trina Arteche-Etong

Probers at the Central Police District (CPD) are looking at four angles on the Trina Arteche-Etong death (see PhilStar website at http://www.philstar.com).

First, suicide. Second, parricide. Third (which is based on other sites and personal information received by PinoyObserver), murder and lastly, homicide.

A suicide is something self-inflicted. Based on pieces of evidence, it can be determined by tests (like paraffin) and exogeneuous factors, like testimonies, etc.

A parricide contemplates that Ted Failon might have something to do with Trina’s death. Parricide is a crime committed by a member of the family which the victim belonged. If the police files parricide charges, only Ted Failon, or Trina’s sister or brother would be arrested and charged. Parricide is a heinous crime and punishable by life imprisonment (before death).

A murder charge contemplates a scenario where members of the household (the househelps  and the driver) killed Trina. Murder is pre-meditated. For police to seriously consider charging murder means that they have pieces of evidence which shows that there was something that could have provoked anybody to kill Trina. This means that members of Failon’s household could be charged and Failon exonerated.

Lastly, homicide. Homicide is not pre-meditated. It just says that somebody shot Trina without any provocation nor a plan to kill. It may mean that a third party was involved, which, in this case, is far-fetched since all testimonies point to a discovery of the incident after it was committed. There was also no indication of forcible entry nor any indication that a third party could have committed the dastardly deed.

Now, police will be piercing up the pieces of evidence they already gathered and re-construct the scene of the incident. The NBI is helping the police re-construct the scene of the incident.

What I am worried is the possibility (for my readers, let me stress POSSIBILITY) that police might actually influence their report to show either suicide or parricide. The direction that this case might take might actually depend on the way public opinion shows, which, obviously, an unfair thing both to Trina and her husband and siblings.

Trina Failon

Many people believe that Trinidad Etong committed suicide. The reason? A failed investment. Etong was a regional franchisee of Vita Plus, a networking company. She’s supposed to open another branch in Tacloban City when she decided to kill herself.

Now, the question that everybody is asking–and that includes me–is why the maids cleaned the bathroom, the house, the pistol and the car all at the same day that the incident happened. Also, why Ted Failon ordered everybody to shut their mouths up, especially to the police and the media.

Everybody is questioning the time lapse between 1pm to 4pm and the things which transpired during that time.

Let me be forthright. Ted Failon is not unfamiliar with police procedure. He knows how police would react once they learned about a shooting incident.

Cops would try to consider everybody a suspect, especially Ted who’s the husband and the one who is nearest to the victim when it happened.

They would try to establish motive and malicious intention. They would dig up problems, finances, insurance claims, etc, all in the name of “investigating what really happened.”

Now, one contentious issue is why the maids cleaned the room, the gun and the car.

IN their testimonies, the maids said that they cleaned the bathroom because they don’t want Ted’s youngest daughter Karisma to see those blood stained tiled walls. Fair enough. Though the law says “ignorance of the law excuses no one from compliance therewith“, a good lawyer would be enough to argue in court that the maid’s acts were done without malice or intention to commit a crime since, in their knowledge, no crime was committed. It was a suicide and thus treated as a personal matter by everybody, and that includes the maid.

Now, what I cannot explain is why the driver took the gun from the bathroom floor, cleaned it all up and placed it inside the drawer. It was only when the police arrived that Ted Failon himself personally handed the gun over to the police. I believe that there was no malice also in this one since the gun was found in the bathroom and when they cleaned it all up, they obviously included the gun and cleanse it all up of stains.

But, why the car? Surely the youngest daughter would not go there and take a look? Again, cops will eventually determine the real reason behind this.

What everybody fears is that the cops would try to present evidence just to pin Ted Failon down. Why? Being a staunch critic of this administration attracts lumpen proletarian flies. These flies would try to create scenarios and put words in your mouth just to crucify you. This is happening to Mr. Ted Failon now.

Ted Failon’s Wife Alleged Suicide: Update

Quezon City, Philippines, April 16, 2009—As of presstime, member of the Philippine media are now at Camp Karingal, the main headquarters of the Central Police District here in the Philippines, waiting for the press conference of the CPD chief on the initial police findings of the alleged suicide of Ted’s wife, Trinidad “Trina” Arteche-Etong.*

On or about 10:20 am yesterday, April 15, 2009, ABS-CBN news anchor Ted Failon left his radio show over at DZMM Channel 2, ten minutes before the show’s end to attend to a call by his wife (Failon said he was the one who called the wife when an earlier statement by Failon said that his wife called him. Let’s leave it at that). The night after, Ted said that they had a marital spat with his 45 year old wife Trinidad “Trina” Arteche-Etong. It concerns “family finances“. Allegedly, the wife got entangled with a huge financial problem which she failed to inform Ted (whatever the cause of that financial distress remains a mystery). The wife left the conjugal home and reportedly came back in the morning when Ted Failon left the house for his morning show over at DZMM.

The wife, reports say (based on the testimonies of the househelps), called Ted or received a call from Ted inside the room of one of their kids. Sensing something wrong, Ted immediately boarded his Blue Pajero and went straight to their house at Tierra Pura subdivision in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.

Upon reaching the house, Ted reportedly saw his wife sprawled inside the bathroom, blood oozing from her temples. A gun, a Walter PK .380 caliber pistol, was beside her and a suicide note. There was conflicting testimonies on the position of the body. The maid said that the body was in a sitting position, with her back against the white tiled bathroom walls. Ted meanwhile said that the body was also in a sitting position, albeit the head is bowed.

The bullet entered the left temple and exited to the right. The gun is positioned at the right side of the body. There were smudges in the entry point of the victim’s temple, signifying, according to police, that the shooting happened a few inches from the temple. This is uncanny, says police, since most suicide cases do not bear smudge marks, an indication that it was a point-blank shot. Anyway, let’s leave it at that.

When Ted saw his still breathing wife, he immediately carried the body to his Blue Pajero. Accompanying him were his sister-in-law Pamela and driver Glen. The maids were left to fend the house. It was at that time that the maids reportedly decided to clean the bathroom. According to the househelp, no one ordered them to clean the crime scene.

When the group reached the New Era University General Hospital, Ted requested the hospital to keep mum about the incident. The wife was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she was immediately attended to by doctors and physicians. Ted reportedly requested that the incident be kept strictly private. No media and no cops should be allowed in.

At around 1pm, Ted allegedly went back to his house. After three hours, cops found out about the incident. They then went inside the Tierra Pura subdivision and started the investigation. What they found was a clean bathroom and a Blue Pajero also cleaned of all bloodstains. However, police reportedly found blood in the passenger seat of Ted’s car.

Latest update: Ted and Trina’s daughter, Kaye Etong, believes the incident is a suicide. Reason: financial troubles reportedly being experienced by the family.

Police found Ted Failon negative of powder burns after the paraffin tests. He was briefly detained at the Camp Karingal and in this morning, Ted Failon went to the New Era University General Hospital to visit his wife. Since yesterday, his wife is being taken cared of by his relatives. Ted’s eldest daughter, Kaye, is also there. The youngest daughter is still clueless as to what happened to her mother.

Meanwhile, Ted’s househelps were also interrogated. Police are thinking of filing obstruction of justice charges against them.

The wife is still struggling for her life at the ICU. She’s now comatose.

* Trinidad “Trina” Arteche-Etong is a 45-year old nurse. She has a very good political pedigree. She belongs to a privileged political family in Eastern Samar. She has been with Ted since my friend was still a struggling journalist.

Ted Failon’s wife in critical condition

While I’m writing this, the lovely wife of ABS-CBN Channel 2 news anchor Ted Failon is in serious condition at the New Era University General Hospital. The hospital is just meters away from their conjugal home in Tierra Pura, Tandang Sora avenue, Quezon City.

Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN head for Corporate Communications called for understanding and avoid speculations as to the cause of the incident. Some malicious tongues say that Ted’s wife allegedly committed suicide, which is, to say the least, a very malicious insinuation.

Ted is still distraught as to what happened to his young wife, which I believe, is a few years younger than Ted. His wife has been with him since he first started his career as a young broadcaster over at ABS-CBN 2. I was fortunate to meet her with Ted when I was doing my OJT over at DZMM Channel 2.

Right now, the wife of Ted Failon is clinically dead, according to sources in the hospital.

My dear readers, let’s pray for her safe recovery. Let’s refrain from all speculations. Let’s respect the privacy of Mr. Ted Failon especially in this time when their family is undergoing a very serious situation.
