Are we truly free?

Chief Justice Reynato Puno put it quite simply for us–we, the Filipino People, are still enslaved by foreign interests and repressed by our very own elites. Puno lambasted this government for being helpless in resolving current issues, like extra-judicial killings, terrorism and economic crises.

While he’s saying these things, a group of students confronted policemen at the foot of Mendiola bridge. These youngsters tried to show their disgusts against government.

In America, thousands of Filipinos held their own independence activities. Throughout the world, Filipinos everywhere celebrated the Day of Independence.

While all of these are happening, I ask myself–are we truly free? What really is the true meaning of freedom?

A latest survey by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines) says that 43.8% of Filipinos said they’re pessimistic about the economy of the country. About 83% of Pinoys, meanwhile, consider themselves very poor.

In some parts of the world, the crisis has reached monumental proportions that riots already broke out. I hope it does’nt happen here, but even government is expecting the worst to happen.

Let’s just pray that God will protect us from harm.
