Noynoy to give up Hacienda Luisita

Senator Noynoy Aquino, who is running for the presidency in the 2010 elections, says that he’s willing to give up his family’s property rights over the Hacienda Luisita to farm workers if he wins the election. Noynoy says it’s a wise business decision because that would free the farm from malicious political intrigues.
Rafael Mariano however of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) is not satisfied. Mariano says that Noynoy should not do it because of politics, he should do it in the name of social justice. Farm workers at Hacienda Luisita have been there since the 1940’s and under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law, they deserve the lands they have tilled for decades.
It’s understandable why this issue is very sensitive to Noynoy. Certain sectors are accusing him of being a landlord. And if he wins this elections, a president should not have any fiduciary interests in any way and in whatever business whatsoever. His shares over at Hacienda Luisita are tricky political issues. That’s why this early, he should do the right thing and dispose of it in the name of the farm workers.
