The Armed Forces of Philippines denied that the dreaded terror group Abu Sayyaf (Al Harakatul Al-Islamiya) is behind the recent abduction of Irish priest and missionary Michael Sinnott in Pagadian City. Major General Benjamin Dolorfino, chief of the AFP Western Mindanao Command said a big kidnap-for-ransom (KFR) group known largely as the Pentagon KFR group is possibly the one who abducted the priest in his residence a few days ago.
The 79-year old priest, along with his captors were seen in Lanao province, although the AFP did not say where in Lanao was the group sighted.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has urged government to expedite the recovery of Sinnott. In a statement, the CBCP said that Sinnott’s health might be jeopardized since the priest is not physically fit. Sinnott, according to the St. Columbian Order of Missionaries, had a heart bypass surgery a few years back.
The priest, who was abducted by at least six heavily armed men last Sunday, has been in the Philippines since 1976. Sinnott has been a missionary since he arrived here and has been a long time resident of Mindanao.
